Lifesaver!
A dad who suffered a cardiac arrest on a beach was kept alive by surfers until an ambulance arrived. Father-of-three Bill Shackman, was surfing in the water at East Sands in St Andrews, Fife on December 8 2020, he collapsed suffering a cardiac arrest and didn't recall anything about the morning of the incident or the hours afterwards. The 48-year-old says that he wouldn't be alive today if it wasn't for the actions of fellow surfers who ran to his aid, performed CPR and used a nearby defibrillator. Former army officer Scott Mitchell and retired firefighter Lewis Hamilton took it in turns to keep Bill's heart going until the ambulance arrived. Lewis knew there was a defibrillator nearby and used this to keep Bill alive until the emergency services arrived. Emergency services took him to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. He was later diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator. |
