Free training in CPR and how to use a public access defibrillator

About our training, CPR SAVES LIVES

For every minute that passes without receiving CPR or having a defibrillator used after cardiac arrest, chances of survival decrease by 10%.

Starting CPR as soon as possible gives the person the best chance of surviving a cardiac arrest.

We work to empower as many people as possible to learn how they can save someone’s life with CPR.

Our volunteers provide free CPR and defibrillator awareness sessions to community groups throughout the North East of Fife

Heart Start St Andrews offers a free training programme in basic life support and how to use a public access defibrillator. These training sessions are open to all members of the general public in North East Fife . This can be from work place organisations as well as local groups or communities . Individuals would be advised to gather a group of interested people or see the online course below.

Our training follows the guidelines of the British Heart Foundation Heart Start programme and the Resuscitation Council UK for basic life support.

All of our instructors are certified to deliver community courses by either the Resuscitation Council UK or a local first aid training provider.

You do not need to be trained to give CPR or use a defibrillator in an emergency. The 999 call handler and defib itself will talk you through it. However having some training will increase a rescuer's confidence, reduce delays in getting help and provide quality CPR and shocks from a defibrillator. This increases the casualty's chance of survival.

Our sessions are not a formal classroom course but designed to answer questions, give basic instruction, be interactive and create confidence.

In 2 hours we cover ;

  • Calling for help
  • Primary survey
  • Unresponsive adult
  • CPR and defibrillation,
  • Digital support (GoodSAM, what3words etc).

Course attendees will have plenty of opportunity to practice. There is no assessment or written test.
